CLARITY Act Failure May Give Coinbase Breathing Room, Says CEO Armstrong
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has expressed relief that the CLARITY Act did not advance in the US Senate. The bill, which aimed to clarify regulations for the crypto industry, fell short of the necessary votes on September 15. According to Armstrong, the failure could benefit Coinbase by keeping major Wall Street firms from entering the market under clearer rules.
Armstrong acknowledged that regulatory clarity would have brought more traditional financial institutions into the crypto space, resulting in increased competition for Coinbase. However, he maintained that this outcome would not be entirely beneficial to the company, as it would also mean more rivals.
The CEO pointed out that earlier versions of the bill had raised concerns around tokenized equities, penalties for decentralized finance developers, and stablecoin rewards. He stated that these issues had been addressed in the latest Senate draft, which removed Coinbase's objections.
