Clarity Act Fights for Life as Senate Votes Loom
The Clarity Act is a bill that could reshape the cryptocurrency industry in America, but its passage is far from certain. The Senate will hold a key procedural vote on Tuesday to decide whether the bill can move forward.
Proponents of the bill argue that it would establish clear regulations for the crypto sector, which has grown beyond Bitcoin to include meme coins and other cryptocurrencies. Ryan VanGrack, vice chair of Coinbase, said 'tens of millions of Americans are investing in products that don't have clear regulatory oversight. That's an abomination.'
The bill would split oversight of the crypto sector between the SEC and the CFTC, with the CFTC having the majority of control. Critics argue that this is an attempt by the industry to avoid heavy regulatory scrutiny.
Opponents of the bill include Democrats who are concerned about a proposed ethics clause that they say does not go far enough to prevent conflicts of interest. The Department of Justice would be tasked with enforcing the clause, which Democrats object to since they don't believe it would provide a meaningful check on a sitting president.
