Clarity Act Heads to Senate Vote as Crypto Regulation Looms
The Clarity Act, which aims to provide a framework for handling digital assets in the U.S., is set for its first Senate vote on September 15. The legislation has cleared the House and many have been optimistic about it becoming law this year.
However, the bill still faces major hurdles, particularly when it comes to stablecoin issuance and ethics provisions. Regulators may set their own rules if the Clarity Act fails, but that would not be the same as federal law.
Passing the Clarity Act is seen as crucial for mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency, which requires clear rules to grow. It would establish what constitutes a security and what is classified as a digital commodity, lending legitimacy to the asset class and eliminating unexpected charges against popular cryptos or exchanges.
