CLARITY Act Hits Roadblock in Senate Vote
The CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at reforming the crypto market structure, suffered a setback on its first Senate floor test. On Tuesday, senators voted 49-50 against cloture on the motion to proceed to H.R. 3633, falling short of the required 60 votes.
Although the vote was not on the bill's merits but rather on whether to begin debating it, the outcome leaves the legislation's future uncertain. Senate Majority Leader John Thune can try again, but with Congress racing toward its midterm recess, time is running out.
Democrats and some Republicans opposed the bill, citing concerns over ethics restrictions involving federal officials and crypto interests. Senator Elizabeth Warren argued that the proposed safeguards didn't go far enough, while others felt substantial concessions had already been made.
