CLARITY Act Postponed Amid Senate Priorities and Procedural Constraints

Share

The US Senate has postponed consideration of the CLARITY Act, a bill regulating the cryptocurrency market, due to limited time resources and prioritization of other legislative initiatives.

According to reports, Republican Majority Leader John Thune is directing the Senate's activities toward reviewing a package of federal appointments, followed by new sanctions against Russia. The procedural specifics do not allow for simultaneous full consideration of multiple contentious initiatives, so the CLARITY Act has been temporarily removed from the agenda.

The main obstacle to the bill's progress remains the dispute over a provision that prohibits high-ranking US officials from supporting or participating in crypto projects. Journalists emphasize that the most likely scenario is the CLARITY Act will be brought to a vote next week, during the final days of the Senate's work before the summer recess.

Even after Senate approval, the document must undergo a re-vote in the House of Representatives and then be sent for President Donald Trump's signature. If not passed by August 8, further progress may be complicated by rising political tensions ahead of the US midterm elections.
