CLARITY Act Setback Leaves Coinbase and US Crypto Exchanges in Regulatory Limbo

Coinbase and other US crypto exchanges are facing increased regulatory uncertainty after the Senate's failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity, or CLARITY, Act.

The bill aimed to provide clearer rules for market-structure but ultimately fell short of the required votes. Saxo Bank strategist Ruben Dalfovo noted that Coinbase is particularly exposed due to its direct involvement in US crypto markets and potential registration requirements.

Circle, a stablecoin issuer, and Strategy, a Bitcoin treasury company, have different levels of exposure according to Dalfovo. Circle's business is more closely tied to the adoption of its USDC stablecoin, while Strategy's performance is driven primarily by its BTC holdings.

The Senate has limited time to revive the legislation before the current Congress ends on December 18th, leaving a narrow window for lawmakers to act.
