Clarity Act Stalls as Senators Trade Barbs Over Crypto Regulation
The US Senate failed to advance the Clarity Act towards becoming law after it fell short of the 60 votes needed. The procedural vote, which took place on Tuesday, resulted in a 49-50 split, with many Democrats who had previously signaled their support ultimately voting against the bill.
Senator Mark Warner criticized the bill for allowing the president to profit from crypto, stating that they were close to resolving some of the toughest outstanding issues around law enforcement and national security. However, he said that the failure to address this fundamental conflict of interest made it impossible for him to support moving forward.
Senator Elizabeth Warren acknowledged that the bill was a first meaningful attempt at US crypto regulation but expressed disappointment that it fell short on combating illicit finance and protecting investors. She stated that she would be happy to sit down with other Democrats, Republicans, and industry representatives to hammer out a more comprehensive crypto bill.
