Clarity Act Stalls in Senate, Fails to Meet Crucial Deadline

Share

The Clarity Act, landmark cryptocurrency legislation, hangs in the balance as Senate Majority Leader John Thune has yet to file a cloture vote. This procedural vote is necessary before an actual vote on the bill can take place.

With the Senate set to leave for its month-long August recess on Friday, time is running out for the bill to gain traction. However, Thune signaled that he still wants to hold the procedural vote, citing potential interest and cooperation in the coming days.

The Clarity Act aims to comprehensively regulate the crypto industry at the federal level and grant broader authority to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over digital assets.

Despite optimism from some parties, a Senate Democratic staffer described movement on the bill as being 'at a standstill.' The staffer cited three key issues: ethics, illicit finance, and incorporating Senate Agriculture Committee bill text. If these issues can be resolved, Democrats may be willing to move forward with the bill.

Ethics has become a major sticking point, particularly regarding President Donald Trump's expanding cryptocurrency interests. A compromise proposal was sent to the White House last week, but details remain unclear and it is uncertain whether Trump will support it.
