Clarity Act Stalls in Senate Vote, But Another Opportunity Looms
The U.S. Senate's Clarity Act, aimed at structuring the country's crypto market, has not been ruled out despite failing a procedural vote by a narrow margin of 49-50.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis filed a motion to reconsider immediately after the September 15 vote, preserving the option for another vote on the same bill. Seven Democratic senators who opposed advancing the bill have also expressed interest in continuing crypto market structure legislation.
The key variable in determining whether the Clarity Act gets another vote is progress in negotiations over an ethics provision aimed at limiting conflicts of interest involving crypto holdings by public officials.
With the Senate set to recess in early October, time to reach a deal this year is limited. The fate of the Clarity Act hangs in the balance as lawmakers scramble to finalize the bill before the recess.
