CLARITY Act Vote Crushes Coinbase Stock Amid Crypto Market Weakness
Coinbase stock took a significant hit after the US Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act in its procedural vote on Tuesday, September 15.
The bill, which aimed to provide clearer rules for digital assets, was met with a 49-50 vote on cloture, falling short of the required 60 votes to proceed towards formal Senate debate. As a result, Coinbase stock plummeted by around 9% in trading that day, closing at $172.11 and reaching as low as $168.07 during the session.
The setback has been felt across crypto markets, with Bitcoin dropping by about 4% to $75,908, while stablecoin issuer Circle saw its stock fall roughly 9%. Analysts point out that the industry spent 'hundreds of millions' lobbying for the CLARITY Act, making its defeat a significant blow to digital-asset companies.
Without the passage of the bill, crypto firms will continue to rely on existing SEC and CFTC rules, which many worry are less predictable and more enforcement-driven. The next catalyst on the calendar is tomorrow's Federal Reserve meeting, but the CLARITY Act vote has clearly rattled market sentiment.
