CLARITY Act Vote Fails, But Crypto Momentum Shifts Amid New Democrat Support
The CLARITY Act, a crypto legislation bill, recently faced a setback in the Senate when it failed to advance by a vote of 49-50 on September 15. Notably, no Democrats voted in favor of the bill, while Republicans held 53 seats but fell short of the required 60 votes for cloture. Four Republican senators who also opposed the bill were Collins, Hawley, Moran, and Tillis.
The CLARITY Act had undergone over a year of negotiations, with Republicans incorporating more than 126 substantive changes at Democratic request. The bill even included ethics provisions covering the president, vice president, members of Congress, and federal judges, as agreed upon by President Trump. However, Democrats sent a counter-offer on the morning of the vote, which was rejected by Republicans.
Following the failed vote, seven Senate Democrats came forward seeking to reopen negotiations on the bill. This shift in tone is significant, as previously Democrats had blocked the vote while calling for more negotiation. Now, with the vote behind them, they are signaling a willingness to engage.
