CLARITY Act's Failure Gives Credit Unions a Temporary Reprieve
The Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act has given credit unions a temporary reprieve from regulatory uncertainty. According to Kian Sarreshteh, CEO of InvestiFi, this delay is actually beneficial for credit unions as it allows them to close what he considers the legislation's biggest threat: the ability of crypto and fintech companies to offer stablecoin yield in the form of 'rewards'.
Sarreshteh argues that these rewards are actually a way for tech companies to pay interest on stablecoin balances, disguising it as a reward to attract deposits away from community financial institutions. He believes that credit unions are already at risk due to this loophole, and if left unchecked, the entire industry could be in jeopardy.
The CLARITY Act had been proposed to regulate digital assets, but its failure to pass has stalled progress on the legislation. Despite the setback, Sarreshteh remains optimistic that lawmakers will eventually reach an agreement on a broader framework for regulating digital assets.
