CLARITY Act's Failure May Give Coinbase an Edge
Coinbase Global (COIN) CEO Brian Armstrong said that the CLARITY Act's failure may mean less competition for Coinbase, but more in the long term. The bill, which aimed to regulate stablecoins and tokenized stocks, would have given every major financial services firm a reason to incorporate crypto, according to Armstrong.
He noted that with the SEC and CFTC regulations in place, Coinbase may benefit from less competition in the short term. Armstrong also stated that banks were fighting against stablecoin payouts, as they didn't want the competition.
The CLARITY Act failed to pass due to an ethics dispute, but it's clear that its failure has significant implications for the crypto market. Armstrong sees this as an opportunity for Coinbase to continue innovating and expanding its offerings, including tokenized stocks. He noted that these tokens have already achieved nearly $1 billion in trade volume.
The SEC recently granted a five-year exemption for tokenized stock trading venues, allowing them to operate with permissioned automated market makers and liquidity pools. This move is seen as a significant step forward for the crypto industry, and Coinbase is likely to benefit from it.
