Clayton Shifts from Crypto Enforcement to National Security Leadership

Jay Clayton, former SEC chairman and key player in the landmark case against Ripple Labs, has taken on a new role as Director of National Intelligence. In this position, he oversees the US intelligence community's efforts to counter economic espionage and cybersecurity threats.

Clayton's appointment comes after years of involvement with XRP, the token at the center of the SEC-Ripple lawsuit. The agency filed suit against Ripple in December 2020, alleging an unregistered securities offering worth $1.3B through XRP sales.

The case ultimately concluded with a settlement in 2025, with a final civil penalty adjusted to $50 million. Despite Clayton's new role, he has no authority over SEC policy or crypto regulation.
