Clayton Tapped to Lead US AI Force Amid Rapid Industry Growth
Former SEC Chairman Jay Clayton is reportedly set to become the next US AI czar, overseeing the administration's AI Force to monitor the rapidly growing domestic industry.
Clayton's appointment is a significant move, given his history of overseeing emerging technology at the SEC, where he established the Cyber Unit to focus on the crypto sector and policed initial coin offerings (ICOs) and other industry activity.
Under Clayton's tenure, the SEC brought 57 cases against digital assets, blockchain businesses, and ICOs, with a focus on efforts to defraud investors through the use of digital asset securities and violations of federal securities laws.
Clayton's predecessor as crypto czar, David Sacks, handled both crypto and AI policy, but the new AI-focused role appears to leave any crypto work at the White House in the hands of a soon-departing adviser.
