$Clippy Token Scam Hijacks Microsoft X Account in Clever Nostalgia Trick
Microsoft's official X account was recently hijacked by attackers who used it to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency called $Clippy token. The scam was tied to Clippy, Microsoft's famous virtual assistant that resembles a paperclip.
The attackers posted about the token on another related account and promised that they would be able to bring Clippy back if they reached 500,000 likes. This was likely meant to evoke nostalgia in users and get them to engage with the post.
Notably, the attackers also stated that the $Clippy token was paired with Microsoft's own stock (MSTF), although there is no legitimate connection between the two.
Microsoft's team eventually suspended the fraudulent account, but not before the attackers had seemingly threatened bad actors with legal action. However, this apology post was likely fake and was meant to confuse social media followers.
