$Clippy Token Scam Hits Microsoft's Official X Account

Share

Crypto scammers hijacked Microsoft's official X account on October 2, 2026, to promote a fake cryptocurrency token called $Clippy. The attackers took control of the @Microsoft account for approximately 30 minutes and posted a link to the fraudulent token.

The scam went beyond just posting a link. The hijackers changed the account's profile picture, giving it a cosmetic edit that made the scam look like an official rebrand. They also had the hijacked account interact with an impersonator account claiming a connection to Clippy, Microsoft's nostalgic virtual assistant character.

Microsoft regained control within 30 minutes and confirmed the access was unauthorized. The company removed the misleading posts, secured the account, and is investigating the incident. A spokesperson issued a blunt denial of any involvement in $Clippy, stating that 'Microsoft has not authorized, sponsored, endorsed, or granted permission for the creation, promotion, or use of any cryptocurrency token associated with Clippy, Microsoft, or $MSFT.'
