CME Crypto Derivatives Volume Reaches Record High

Share

CME Group reported record crypto derivatives volume for both September and the third quarter. In September, cryptocurrency average daily volume reached 174,000 contracts, representing $8.6 billion in notional value.

This figure more than doubled to 196,000 contracts in the third quarter, worth $7.3 billion in notional value. The growth reflects sustained institutional appetite for regulated crypto derivatives even as spot prices moved through a volatile stretch over the summer.

CME's cryptocurrency product suite has steadily expanded over the past several years, adding smaller-sized contracts and options tied to major crypto benchmarks. This expansion is attracting a wider range of institutional and increasingly retail-adjacent participants trading through regulated futures commission merchants rather than offshore exchanges.
