CME Group Covers 75% of Crypto Market Cap With ADA, LINK, and XLM Futures
CME Group has expanded its crypto futures suite to include contracts for Cardano (ADA), Chainlink (LINK), and Stellar (XLM), bringing its total number of tokens to seven. This move is significant, as it now covers over 75% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization, according to CME's own calculation.
The new contracts were launched on February 9 and are available in both standard and micro sizes. They are cash-settled against CME CF Reference Rates, with the first trades executed between FalconX and Marex for LINK and XLM, and between Cumberland DRW and Wintermute for ADA.
Notably, this expansion into second-tier altcoins reflects a deliberate institutional strategy rather than a momentum play. The exchange has stated that the new tokens maintain moderate-to-high correlations with Bitcoin, ranging from 0.60 to 0.67, meaning they broadly track the market but still offer distinct risk-return profiles useful for hedging and spread trading.
Interestingly, the timing of this launch is notable, as it coincides with a softening market. All three tokens have underperformed relative to their 2021 peaks, and CME itself acknowledged that Bitcoin futures volumes and open interest declined toward year-end 2025 amid broader price weakness.
