CME Group Taps Tokenization to Make Money Circulate 24/7
The CME Group, the world's largest derivatives marketplace, is exploring tokenization to make money circulate 24/7. Giovanni Vicioso, the company's global head of cryptocurrency products, said that a solution developed in partnership with BMO and Google Cloud will allow clients to meet margin calls and liquidity obligations in real-time.
Tokenized money will enable continuous value transfer for three key functions: margin, collateral, and liquidation. The CME Group aims to reduce immobilized capital by making it possible for institutions to move resources as needed, rather than relying on traditional banking hours.
The project utilizes the Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL), a distributed ledger developed by Google Cloud. BMO entered the initiative in March 2023 as the first bank to offer CME's tokenized money solution on GCUL. The plan is to launch the service in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory approval.
The solution targets institutions that need to move resources outside traditional banking hours, such as overnight or weekends. With tokenized money, value can be transferred continuously, not just during designated bank hours.
Vicioso noted that a growing demand for 24/7 markets, tokenized assets, and smart contracts is driving the trend towards greater interoperability between traditional finance institutions and decentralized finance (DeFi) companies.
Despite technological advancements, Vicioso believes that regulatory uncertainty remains a significant barrier to institutional adoption of digital assets.
