CME Surpasses Binance in Bitcoin Futures Open Interest
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has surpassed Binance in Bitcoin futures open interest, reaching 158,300 BTC ($16.5 billion) by June 1. This milestone follows massive ETF inflows and institutional demand, with ETF assets under management exceeding $140 billion. The development also comes after the US government established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve via executive order on March 6, 2025.
The CME's open interest for the top four cryptocurrencies reached $28.3 billion, while Binance held $23 billion and Bybit held $12.2 billion. A recent market crash wiped $74 billion in leveraged positions across the industry, with total liquidations reaching $19.2 billion.
The Bitcoin price slipped to $62,000 in June after the Federal Reserve signaled a tighter policy path, but later rebounded to around the same level when the Fed slashed interest rates by 50 basis points in July.
