CME vs Coinbase: A $41 Billion Derivatives Gap Threatens Violent Shakeout
The Bitcoin derivatives market is experiencing a significant gap between CME and Coinbase, which could lead to a violent position shakeout. As of August 25, CME's net short position on Bitcoin futures was 41,252.1 BTC-equivalent, while Coinbase's nano perpetual-style contract had a net long position of just 151 BTC.
The CME positioning became even more bearish during the week, with the standard-contract net shifting 3,295 BTC further short and the micro net moving 777 BTC further short. However, it is unclear whether these positions are directional shorts or basis trades, which could be offset by cash-and-carry analysis.
The large gap between CME and Coinbase's positions raises concerns about a potential forced unwind risk. If CME shorts are uncovered directional positions, a squeeze would force futures buying through a pool far larger than Coinbase's current net long. This could lead to significant price effects.
It is worth noting that the ETF flows also reinforced the timing limit. Farside data show US spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed $1.12 billion from August 24 through August 27, then lost $201 million on August 28.
