Cobb County Resident Recovers Hundreds of Thousands Lost in Cryptocurrency Scam
Cobb County resident recovers hundreds of thousands lost to cryptocurrency scam.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced that his office's White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit seized and returned cryptocurrency to a victim following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Operation Shamrock, a nonprofit that helps victims of cryptocurrency scams.
The scam began when the perpetrator contacted the victim on social media, claiming they had mutual acquaintances. The person built a relationship with the victim, then introduced them to what appeared to be a legitimate cryptocurrency investment opportunity.
The victim was directed to a fake crypto trading platform that displayed fake investment gains and even allowed small withdrawals, convincing them the investment was real. They eventually deposited hundreds of thousands of dollars, only to have the scam fall apart when the platform showed their money had been lost.
