COIN Stock Soars as Coinbase Clears Another Regulatory Hurdle
Coinbase's derivatives infrastructure has reached another milestone with the approval of Coinbase Clearing LLC by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This move allows the company to register the unit as a derivatives clearing organization, completing its regulated derivatives stack for its platform.
The new clearing unit will use USDC collateral and support 24/7 settlement for eligible contracts. It's designed to directly create and settle fully collateralized contracts, giving Coinbase more control over product development.
COIN stock price reacted positively to the news, moving 1.04% higher in pre-market trading before closing at $191.79 on September 28. The shares had opened at $196.09 and reached an intraday high of $198.78.
While this approval adds another piece to Coinbase's derivatives operation, it doesn't cover every type of derivatives product. The clearing unit is limited to fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, excluding leveraged products.
