Coinbase Abandons Base App Brand, Shifts Focus to Multichain Trading
Coinbase has dropped its Base App branding after just over a year and returned to the Coinbase Wallet name. The rebranding effort, which aimed to create an all-encompassing super app integrating trading, payment rails, messaging, social content feeds, and miniature applications centered on the Base layer-2 blockchain, failed to gain traction.
CEO Brian Armstrong admitted in March that the social experiment 'didn't quite work,' while Base founder Jesse Pollak confirmed that creator-oriented tools underperformed expectations and appetite for social features had 'disintegrated completely.'
The wallet now carries its original branding again, accompanied by a strategic repositioning. Coinbase frames Coinbase Wallet as an 'everything exchange' and an experimental 'test kitchen' for financial products and digital assets unavailable through Coinbase's traditional centralized platform.
Hyperliquid Perpetuals are the centerpiece of the updated offering, enabling qualified traders to access over 290 derivative markets with leverage reaching 50x on select instruments. The perpetual contracts span cryptocurrency, equity, and commodity underlying assets, handled by Hyperliquid for trade execution while users control their positions via the Coinbase interface.
Geographic restrictions exclude traders in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada from accessing this feature, although US-based customers can utilize a distinct regulated futures offering through Coinbase Financial Markets, which operates under Commodity Futures Trading Commission registration.
