Coinbase AI System Slashes Support Testing Time to Minutes
Coinbase has revealed that its AI-powered support system, called Autopilot, can now complete a testing cycle of roughly 90 cases in just 30-45 minutes. Previously, this task took one to two weeks of manual work. The announcement, made by Coinbase engineers on September 21, highlights CEO Brian Armstrong’s push for an AI-native company and how automation is reducing repetitive tasks.
The Autopilot system tests the procedures that support bots follow when handling customer issues. It includes human approval before any procedure changes go into production. The next challenge for Armstrong’s operating model is whether faster procedure development will result in reliable support and accountable actions on customer accounts.
Coinbase’s disclosures address the need for correct problem resolution and proper authority when accessing customer data. The company has implemented measures to ensure these needs are met, although the effect on customers remains unmeasured. Approving changes, restricting permissions, and measuring real results are ongoing responsibilities as more work is automated.
The time savings come from a combination of factors. In May, Armstrong announced a 14% workforce reduction, citing both a weak crypto market and AI changing how employees work. The September engineering update provides a specific example of how AI is streamlining support processes. Autopilot helps maintain the procedures that bots follow, creating isolated test users and mock account states, simulating conversations, and grading outcomes against expected behavior.
