Coinbase Bitcoin Prediction Market Hits $85K Target by 2026
Coinbase has launched a prediction market targeting the price of Bitcoin (BTC) to reach $85,473.66 by October 6, 2026. The market, which closed recently, attracted significant interest with a total trading volume of $7.2 million and interest amounting to $1.76 million. This market allowed traders to buy and sell contracts based on whether BTC would hit the specified price target by the expiry date.
Prediction markets on Coinbase operate by offering regulated 'Yes/No' contracts on various future events. Each contract pays $1 if the event occurs and $0 if it does not. The price of the contract reflects the market's probability of the event happening. For example, a price of $0.65 indicates a 65% chance of the event occurring. Traders can buy 'Yes' if they believe the event will happen or 'No' if they think it will not.
To participate in these markets, users need a Coinbase account and must complete onboarding with Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), which includes identity verification and basic financial details. Once approved, traders can use USD or USDC from their main Coinbase account to trade prediction contracts. The settlement of contracts is based on an independent, regulated exchange determining the result using a stated 'source of truth.'
Coinbase emphasizes that trading prediction contracts involves substantial risk and may result in the loss of the entire investment.
