Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Hits Record 78-Day Negative Streak
The Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index has remained negative for 78 consecutive days, the longest streak ever recorded. The index tracks the BTC price gap between Coinbase and other major exchanges, acting as a proxy for US Bitcoin demand.
According to CoinGlass data, the latest reading stands at -0.1145%. This means that Bitcoin is trading at a relative discount on Coinbase compared with international venues, suggesting weaker US buying activity or heavier selling pressure from domestic institutions.
Analysts say the persistent negative premium points to institutional players actively trimming Bitcoin positions rather than accumulating them. The contrast between the Coinbase premium and the ETF market is striking: US spot Bitcoin ETFs swung back to net inflows in July, but that renewed fund-flow momentum hasn't been enough to lift the Coinbase premium out of negative territory.
The divergence suggests the US market isn't uniformly bullish or bearish; it's split between institutional channels that are cautiously re-entering and spot-market participants on Coinbase who remain net sellers. Whether this gap narrows or widens will say a lot about which group ends up setting the tone for Bitcoin's next move.
