Coinbase Brings High-Stakes Trading to Base App with Hyperliquid Integration
Coinbase has integrated Hyperliquid's perpetual futures protocol into its Base app, allowing users to trade with up to 50x leverage. This move positions Coinbase as a comprehensive financial hub, offering both spot and derivatives trading.
Perpetual futures have become the dominant force in crypto trading, accounting for roughly 75% of total trading volume globally. Chintan Turakhia, Coinbase's head of engineering, noted that this shift toward derivatives is a key driver behind the integration.
The integration with Hyperliquid leverages a decentralized protocol rather than Coinbase's own matching engine, offering users deeper liquidity and tighter spreads. However, it also introduces complexities around custody and settlement.
For traders, the integration means easier access to leveraged positions on major cryptocurrencies without leaving the Coinbase ecosystem. It also signals a broader trend of centralized exchanges incorporating DeFi protocols to expand their product offerings.
