Coinbase Brings In-House Derivatives Clearing to US Market
Coinbase has gained control over its derivatives clearing function after registering Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This move marks the first time a USDC-native derivatives clearinghouse is operating in the United States.
The CFTC-approved launch of Coinbase Clearing replaces traditional dollar-based clearing, allowing for 24/7 settlement with USDC collateral. This shift removes scheduling constraints that dollar-based clearing imposed on institutional desks managing risk across time zones.
Coinbase now holds three pieces of its regulated derivatives stack: Coinbase Financial Markets as the futures commission merchant, Coinbase Derivatives as the trading venue, and Coinbase Clearing as the post-trade layer guaranteeing settlement. This in-house control gives Coinbase a tighter grip on margin, collateral, and risk decisions across its pipeline.
