Coinbase Brings Tokenized Stocks to Base
Coinbase has launched tokenized stocks on its Ethereum layer-2 network, Base. Eligible users outside of the U.S. can now hold fractional shares of Apple and Nvidia in self-custody wallets or trade them on Aerodrome.
The tokens are issued by Coinbase and represent a direct claim on the underlying share, rather than a derivative tied to its price. Each token is backed 1:1 with a real share held in custody, with dividends paid automatically.
Users can use these tokens as collateral on decentralized lending protocol Aave or add them to liquidity pools, automated portfolios, indexes, and derivatives. The tokenized stocks use Coinbase's B20 token standard, which processes dividends and stock splits without changing token balances or disrupting DeFi positions.
