Coinbase Builds End-to-End Derivatives Stack with CFTC Approval
Coinbase, a leading crypto exchange, has achieved a significant milestone in its bid to dominate the US derivatives market. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization, allowing it to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps.
The approval means that Coinbase now controls all three components of a regulated derivatives stack: exchange, brokerage, and clearing. This vertical integration gives the company tighter control over product design, listing, customer access, and final settlement. The new clearinghouse will use USDC collateral and support 24/7 settlement, fitting the always-on trading model common in crypto.
The CFTC's registration specifically limits the clearinghouse to fully collateralized products. This means that not all derivatives products will be affected by the approval. However, Coinbase is now well-positioned to design and offer a range of regulated derivatives products with flexible settlement capabilities.
