Coinbase Cements Derivatives Ecosystem with CFTC Approval
Coinbase has achieved another milestone in its bid to create a comprehensive derivatives ecosystem. The company's Coinbase Clearing LLC entity has been registered by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a Derivatives Clearing Organization.
This approval allows Coinbase Clearing to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, which are all essential components of the derivatives market. The registration specifically limits the clearinghouse to fully collateralized products, meaning that not all forms of leveraged derivatives trading will be covered by this new entity.
Coinbase has designed its new clearing infrastructure around USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement, a model more common in crypto markets than traditional financial markets. This will enable the company to create products that settle around the clock, but it's worth noting that not all derivatives products will be affected by this change.
The registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC is a significant development for the company, as it now has three separate regulated components covering derivatives: Coinbase Derivatives LLC operates as a designated contract market, Coinbase Financial Markets serves as a futures commission merchant, and Coinbase Clearing LLC adds the DCO. This vertical integration will allow Coinbase to have tighter control over its products and reduce dependence on outside clearing infrastructure.
