Coinbase CEO Blames Politics, Not Company Actions, for Senate Crypto Bill Defeat
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has disputed claims that he or Coinbase was responsible for the Senate's failure to pass the CLARITY Act. The bill, which aimed to establish clearer guidelines for crypto regulations in the US, fell short by a single vote with a 49-50 majority against it.
Armstrong pointed out that Coinbase had initially withdrawn its support for the bill in January but later reversed its stance and backed the revised version by May. He attributed the bill's failure to changes made to the legislation and unresolved political disputes, rather than any actions taken by his company or himself.
The Coinbase CEO also took aim at The Wall Street Journal, accusing it of preparing a story that would unfairly blame him and Coinbase for the bill's demise. Armstrong criticized the media outlet for echoing arguments made by banking groups, highlighting ongoing regulatory risks and federal policy uncertainty that affect exchanges and DeFi adoption.
