Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Eschews Traditional Philanthropy
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has a net worth of $9 billion, making him one of the richest leaders in the crypto space. Unlike many of his peers, he's taking an unusual approach to philanthropy.
Armstrong argues that some large philanthropic organizations can do more harm than good over time, becoming influenced by ideological interests and deviating from their original intentions. He claims it's 'remarkably hard' to find a foundation that hasn't been captured by ideology.
The co-founder of Coinbase said financial advisors encouraged him to create a charitable foundation after the company went public, but he declined, fearing loss of control over his donations. Armstrong cited the Ford Foundation as an example, stating he believes Henry Ford 'would be turning over in his grave if he knew what they were up to.'
Armstrong uses a donor-advised fund to support causes he believes can advance civilization, and hasn't ruled out creating a foundation in the future.
