Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Rejects Traditional Philanthropy

Share

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has amassed an estimated $9 billion in net worth, but he's taking an unconventional approach to philanthropy. Unlike many of his peers, Armstrong has no plans to establish a traditional charitable foundation, citing concerns that such institutions can become influenced by ideological interests and lose their original purpose.

Armstrong discussed his views on philanthropy with Katie Miller on her podcast, describing his position as a 'contrarian view.' He argued that charitable organizations can become 'captured' by ideology, moving away from the intentions of their founders. Armstrong pointed to the Ford Foundation as an example, saying he believed Henry Ford would be displeased if he knew what they were doing.

Armstrong still gives to causes he believes in, but uses a donor-advised fund instead of creating a permanent foundation. He's also exploring other ways to support projects outside traditional charitable giving, such as sponsoring the annual championship of the mobile strategy game The Battle for Polytopia.
