Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has outlined an ambitious vision for combining artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency payment infrastructure, dubbed Agentic Finance. According to Armstrong, AI agents need programmable money, which crypto provides, to transact and manage funds autonomously.

Armstrong believes that AI and crypto are complementary technologies, with AI providing intelligence and crypto supplying the financial rails. He cited the example of electricity or the internet as general-purpose infrastructure, arguing that crypto works in a similar way.

Coinbase has already begun supporting this approach through its Base USDC and x402 protocol, which power most agentic payments. The company launched Coinbase for Agents in June 2026 to give developers financial tools for autonomous systems.
