Coinbase CEO Warns Against Abandoning Crypto for AI
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has spoken out against startups abandoning crypto to chase the AI boom. He believes that autonomous AI programs will need to hold money and borrow funds without opening conventional bank accounts, making crypto infrastructure more useful.
Armstrong argues that viewing crypto as a 'general purpose technology' like electricity or the internet is more accurate than seeing it as competing with AI. He calls this vision 'Agentic Finance,' or AiFi, which he believes will enable software to pay automatically for services and data.
Coinbase has developed an open payment protocol called x402, which allows software to pay for computing power and other services without needing a bank account. This protocol is now controlled by the Linux Foundation-backed body.
