Coinbase Clears CFTC Hurdle for USDC-Native Clearinghouse Expansion
Coinbase has secured a significant milestone in its expansion plans after receiving clearance from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to launch its USDC-native clearinghouse. This move marks a major step forward for Coinbase, one of the largest crypto exchanges by trading volume.
The new clearinghouse, Coinbase Clearing LLC, is a proprietary Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) that integrates seamlessly with Coinbase's derivatives broker and exchange. This allows for faster product development, more efficient operations, and greater flexibility in offering regulated products.
USDC, the stablecoin used by Coinbase, enables 24/7 real-time settlement and a core collateral mechanism. By leveraging USDC's peg to the US dollar, traditional settlement delays tied to standard banking hours are eliminated, allowing continuous trading and capital mobility for market participants.
