Coinbase Clears Hurdle with CFTC Approval for Derivatives Clearing Organization
Coinbase has secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate a derivatives clearing organization, Coinbase Clearing LLC. The registration allows Coinbase's new entity to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps.
The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, 2026. According to the CFTC's registration record, the approval covers fully collateralized products such as futures, options on futures, and swaps.
Coinbase described its clearinghouse as a USDC-native clearinghouse within its US derivatives business, which will use USDC collateral and support 24/7 settlement. This is part of Coinbase's CFTC-regulated derivatives stack, combining a futures commission merchant, a designated contract market, and the newly registered clearing organization.
