Coinbase Clears Hurdle with New Clearinghouse Approval from CFTC
Coinbase Global Inc. has secured approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate its own clearinghouse, Coinbase Clearing LLC, for fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps in the United States.
The registration is limited to fully collateralized contracts, where the clearinghouse holds enough funds at all times to cover potential losses. This model removes the need to calculate variation margin or maintain a default fund.
Coinbase Clearing plans to clear contracts traded on Designated Contract Markets (DCMs) and Swap Execution Facilities (SEFs) that agree to follow its rules and risk requirements. It also intends to offer clearing directly to market participants and to customers of FCMs that become clearing members.
According to Coinbase, the new entity will support faster product development, more efficient operations, and the flexibility to bring new regulated products to market over time.
