Coinbase Clears Path to USDC-Native Derivatives
Coinbase has made significant strides in the world of finance by launching Coinbase Clearing LLC as a USDC-native clearinghouse after receiving approval from the CFTC. This marks the first USDC-native clearinghouse for derivatives in the US, and it's a major milestone for the company.
The registration didn't come about overnight. It was made possible by the CFTC's December 2025 launch of a digital assets pilot program, which opened the door for Bitcoin, Ether, and USDC to be used as collateral within regulated derivatives markets.
USDC settlement can happen around the clock, meaning that collateral transfers and margin calls don't need to wait for a bank to open. This is a significant operational upgrade for institutional traders managing risk across global time zones.
