Coinbase Clears Path with CFTC Approval for USDC-Native Clearinghouse
Coinbase has made significant progress in building its derivatives infrastructure with the recent approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC, a clearinghouse native to USDC.
The CFTC approved the registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC on September 28, making it the first clearinghouse built around USDC. This approval joins Coinbase Financial Markets and Coinbase Derivatives as the three components of Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure.
With this new clearinghouse, Coinbase can now create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly, a capability that will enable faster product development, more efficient operations, and flexibility to launch new regulated products over time. Existing partners will continue to support certain products, including margined derivatives business and an upcoming single stock perpetual futures.
Coinbase's general counsel, Molly Abraham, stated: 'Today's CFTC approval completes Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.'
