Coinbase Clears Regulatory Hurdle for Fully Collateralized Derivatives

Coinbase Clearing LLC has secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to register as a derivatives clearing organization. This move expands Coinbase's regulated U.S. market infrastructure, covering brokerage, listing, and clearing services.

The CFTC approved registration for fully collateralized futures, options, and swaps. However, leveraged derivatives remain subject to third-party clearing, limiting the scope of Coinbase's in-house clearing operation.

Coinbase Clearing will use USDC as collateral and support settlement 24 hours a day. The approval was recorded at 5:11 a.m. ET (09:11 UTC) on September 30.
