Coinbase Clears Regulatory Hurdle with CFTC DCO Approval
Coinbase has secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to establish itself as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO).
This authorization paves the way for Coinbase to build a comprehensive regulatory infrastructure for derivatives, although it is currently limited to fully collateralized contracts.
Coinbase Clearing LLC has integrated the clearing process on top of its existing qualifications as a futures broker and a designated contract market.
The institution's USDC-based design aims to enhance product development speed and operational efficiency, but is restricted to handling only fully collateralized contracts for now.
This regulatory approval sparks speculation about potential support for HIP-3 markets in the future, mirroring an initiative announced earlier this month by Kraken's parent company, Payward, through Bitnomial Exchange and NinjaTrader Clearing.
