Coinbase Clears Regulatory Hurdles with USDC-Native Clearinghouse Approval
Coinbase has made significant strides in establishing its derivatives infrastructure by registering Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
This registration allows Coinbase to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps using USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.
The CFTC's approval is a crucial component of Coinbase's derivatives stack, which now includes an exchange, brokerage, and clearing infrastructure. This vertical integration will enable the company to design products around its always-on trading model, which is common in crypto markets but less typical in traditional finance.
Coinbase Clearing LLC's registration specifically limits the clearinghouse to fully collateralized products, excluding leveraged derivatives trading. However, this limitation allows Coinbase to focus on building a regulated infrastructure that fits its business needs and customer demands.
