Coinbase Denies Role in CLARITY Act Senate Failure
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has pushed back against claims that his company's actions led to the failure of the CLARITY Act in the US Senate. The bill, which aimed to provide regulatory clarity for the crypto industry, failed to pass with a vote of 49-50 on September 15.
Armstrong argued that Coinbase had initially withdrawn its support for an earlier version of the bill in January due to concerns over DeFi, tokenized assets, and stablecoin rewards. He claimed that the company's opposition was necessary to prevent harm to the crypto industry.
The CLARITY Act was later revised, with changes made to address Coinbase's concerns. Armstrong praised the revisions as a 'big improvement' for rewards, tokenization, DeFi, and the CFTC's authority in May. He expressed his support for the final Senate version by September, stating that it was 'great.'
The bill's failure to pass was attributed to several factors, including ethics rules involving President Donald Trump and stablecoin policies. The issue of stablecoin rewards was a major point of contention between crypto companies and banking groups.
