Coinbase Earns DCO Status, Expanding Derivatives Clearing Capabilities
Coinbase, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange, has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to become a derivatives clearing organization (DCO). This approval is a significant milestone for Coinbase, as it expands its ability to clear futures and swaps without the need for third-party intervention.
The CFTC's approval applies to fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, but does not specify the exact assets those derivatives may be based on or the categories of swaps Coinbase will clear under this authorization. Coinbase currently offers prediction market trading as a distribution partner for Kalshi.
Coinbase's DCO status is also expected to play a role in the company's plans to tokenize trading cards, including Pokémon cards. The company has announced plans to let users 'open' digital packs of trading cards, with a physical card backing each 'pull.'
Coinbase's partnership with Nodal Clear, announced in June 2025, may also bring USDC-based futures to market. These derivatives will treat USDC as a true cash equivalent stablecoin, and are just one component of Coinbase's planned offerings using cryptocurrencies as derivative assets.
