Coinbase Enters Trading Card Game Market with Digital Collectibles
Coinbase has entered the Trading Card Game (TCG) market by allowing users to open card packs directly on their mobile devices, with each earned card corresponding to a real physical collectible that can be kept in custody and traded or redeemed for the physical item.
Major platforms like Coinbase have brought TCG out of its niche status as an on-chain collectibles segment and into mainstream crypto. The toy economy drives demand through IP, scarcity, community belonging, limited editions, hidden variants, and blind boxes, which further fuels secondary trading.
The existing infrastructure for physical cards includes grading systems (PSA, BGS, CGC), trading platforms (eBay, Cardmarket), and custody services (Vault). Blockchain platforms are digitizing physical cards already graded and custodied. For example, Collector Crypt uses Courtyard as an example where users can store their rating cards in a Vault, with ownership transferred on-chain.
Gacha, a business model centered around random consumption, instant recycling, and continuous inventory turnover, has transformed TCG. Users spend 50 USDT or 100 USDT per draw; if they receive a card they like, they keep it; otherwise, they sell it back to the platform and use the returned funds to draw again.
