Coinbase Exec Sees CFTC Approval as Catalyst for Crypto Innovation
Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN) Vice Chairman Ryan Van Grack highlighted how the exchange’s latest CFTC approval could speed up innovation in crypto products. The approval completes Coinbase’s derivatives registrations across brokerage, exchange, and clearing, allowing more operations to be brought in-house and reducing reliance on third parties.
Van Grack emphasized that this regulatory milestone opens new opportunities for launching regulated products. He argued that investors should have access to both direct Bitcoin (BTCUSD) ownership and spot ETFs, rather than viewing them as competing products. He also anticipates that clearer custody rules will expand direct Bitcoin access for investment advisers and institutions alongside spot ETFs.
Looking ahead, Van Grack described tokenization as the most significant upgrade to financial markets since the shift from paper to electronic trading. Blockchain-based markets could enable global, 24/7 trading of stocks, bonds, and even real estate, with faster settlement, greater transparency, and fewer intermediaries. Coinbase has already set up an international tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi, and recent CFTC actions on tokenized assets, along with the SEC’s innovation exemption, could bring similar opportunities to U.S. investors.
Van Grack noted that Washington’s primary task now is to accelerate regulatory clarity for Bitcoin holders rather than starting from scratch. While the CLARITY Act failed, he believes SEC and CFTC rulemaking could still provide the necessary certainty to support further institutional adoption of crypto.
